A gripping slice of Americana, telling the exciting tale of Texas Ranger Daniel Webster Roberts’ Ranger service. As Captain of Company D, this book details the social life of the rangers, their relations with frontier society, their food, dress, and entertainment.

“We set out in this writing to record the work of Company “D”, Frontier Battalion, not for any selfish consideration. But, being almost importuned by our real friends to do so, we thought we could tell what we really know to be true in a way that might spin out a thread strong enough to bind together an intelligent idea of the needs of that service, how the service was performed, and at least a vision of the final disposition of the horrid Indian question. Our egotism doesn’t lead us to say that Texas did it all; but our little part is richly treasured in the archives of our “native heath”—Texas. Our sorrows are there, also, in many a grave not even marked by human hands to show where our brave defenders met death—yielding the last sacrifice in defense of Texas.”

Rangers And Sovereignty eBook Dan W Roberts

In August, 1873 Dan W. Roberts and nine other men were on the trail of 27 Indians who had stolen cattle. They came upon the Indians who started firing from the cover of a gulley. Dan's brother George was shot through the face in the first volley. A man was detailed to take care of him. The remaining plainsmen attacked. I won't steal Dan Roberts' thunder by writing about what happened. Read the book. Dan would go on to become Captain Dan W. Roberts, Co. D,, Texas Rangers, serving from 1874 to 1882. He is my great uncle, as I learned through genealogical research lately.
There would be more fights with Indians, a riot to deal with in Mason, deployment to the border with Mexico (and frontier diplomacy), and on the trail of robbers and cattle thieves. This is a good book by a good man, a plainsman who rode hard, shot straight, told the truth, and served Texas.

Rangers And Sovereignty eBook Dan W Roberts Reviews

I have since childhood, loved the Texas Rangers. I have met a few of the modern
Rangers and can say without doubt they are the finest Law Enforcement Agency in
The World. Honest to the bone and brothers one and all.
I found the book interesting, and entertaining.
I appreciated the personal perspective and writing style this early Texas Ranger gave in his book.

The re-printing could have been done (copied) better, but still had only very minor issues.

All in all, this book will remain a part of my library.
Good history.
Kind of drags after awhile. Pretty good historical book though.
It’s a short read, but offers great insight of the mindset it took to survive as a Ranger. The tales are not chronological, but more of a diary of specific incidents.
I've read a number of books about the Rangers. Many have been great and full if historical information. But the vast majority have come from research and record-gathering. While more difficult to read, both from a linguistic and typographical standpoint, nothing is quite as interesting to me as hearing of days gone by from the personal writing of those who were there. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more memoirs.

While scanning old books like these into digital form introduces some typographical artifacts and formatting issues, the advent of (and other e-book) versions of these manuscripts allows access to far more readers than would be possible with what few copies likely remain of these historical missives.

Thank you to and the digital publishers. Please keep them coming.
Being a Texas Ranger in the past is not the Texas Ranger depicted by Chuck Norris. These were real men, struggling with life and with their desire to make something of themselves in their determined protection of Texas. They were both hard men and men of compassion and courage. This book details one of the Ranger companies as it grew and operated across the State. It is more history book and a tale of adventure and heroes, so prepare yourself for a bit of dryness as the author moves through the history of the company. This book does not lend itself to a rapid read, as books of fiction often do, but is methodical and detailed. This is a good read, if you are one who loves a bit of history. If you were looking for something a bit more dramatic, I think you might want to look elsewhere. With this book, you will learn about the "real" Texas Rangers, and most likely be very happy they had to do the job and not you.
