Seconds to Live is the 3rd book in Melinda Leigh's Scarlet Falls series and it's definitely my favorite one. Like all of Melinda's books, once you start reading you will have a very hard time stopping until it's finished. No matter how many books she writes, she is one of those rare authors that always manages to remain unpredictable. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.Product details

First off let me just say that, I LOVED THIS BOOK! Hardcore kind of Love!
Secondly, thanks to Melinda Leigh, Montlake and Netgalley for providing a review copy of Seconds to Live. I also purchased this one (as with all of her previous books) on audio. The narrator (Cris Dukehart) is amazeballs and bring the book to life in a whole other way.
So, now, onto the review...
Mac Barrett, I have liked him from the moment we met him in Hour of Need. Let's face it, he's like an enigma. You see him, you know he is there but there is something hidden in him that you don't know is there. And buddy let me tell you, there is a side to Mac Barrett that will make you go, "Dayum, son. I didn't see that coming." Well, that was my reaction anyway.
Mac returns to Scarlet Falls when he gets a message while int he Jungles of South America. While on assignment to study his family of River Otters he finds out his dad is dying. He needs to get home, asap. But he runs into a problem. A big rapid fire kind of problem, so he is delayed. By the time he gets in, it's too late to say goodbye. This does something to Mac. But as if the poor man hasn't been through enough in the last two days, he has a car wreck thanks to a body lying in the road. Wet roads send Mac careening off into the bushes and when he reappears, the body is gone.
Enter, Stella Dane, who is the one to find Mac on the side of the road. The mystery of the woman in the road turns into an all out man hunt to find her. She is the woman Stella has as a missing woman from a crime scene straight out of the movies. Problem is? She is nowhere to be found.Until, she's placed in the park....
Things go from bad to worse and then flip upside down. I loved the interactions between Stella, who is doing her best to stay on task and find out who is killing the woman in Scarlet Falls while trying to not fall for Mac. And Mac, a man on a mission of his own has to fight the wilds oh his desires... but when things go from gravy to blood they have to take actions to save someone that means a lot to each of them. Time ticks away as Mac searches for answers.... then becomes one of the missing. Stella, along with Grant and Hannah, cause lets face it, the Barrett's leave no man behind, race off to try and find Mac before its too late.
This book gave my heart a good work out! It's a page turner from page one. Or in my case from the pages to the audio I could NOT put it down. I'd get lost in the book that I not only kept getting side tracked while doing household chores.... but I burned part of dinner. Did I care? No, cereal is good at anytime. LOL I loved, loved, loved, this book. As always Melinda hit a home run!
This series about the Barrett family makes me wish the rating system was 1-10 stars so I could give the entire series 10 stars. It is most excellent, combining mystery, a family with a great deal of love for one another, a lot of ambition, and romance. Three boys and a girl, all of whom were raised with military precision by their father, even though he is severely disabled. As adults, three of the children leave home except the one son who stays in Scarlet Falls to raise his family and care for their dad.
In Hour of Need, we meet Major Grant Barrett whose brother and sister-in-law were murdered while he was stationed in Afghanistan. He comes home to the realization that there is no one to take care of his young niece and nephew. So, he resigns his commission and takes on the task of surrogate dad. Fortunately for him, his next door neighbor is a wonderful and lovely woman with a pre-teen daughter and a grandmother in her home, all of whom are willing to assist him.
In Minutes to Kill, sister Hannah Barrett, an ambitious, rising corporate attorney who travels the globe, witnesses a crime and decides to help the young girl involved. She takes the girl back to Scarlet Falls and, inadvertently takes the criminals along with her. This puts her in serious trouble and needing the help of a local police officer.
Finally we have Seconds to Live, the story of the youngest Barrett, Mac, who is a wildlife biologist - but is that all he is? He had some rough times as a teenager and has spent most of his adult life separated from his family, by choice - even though he knew, on those occasions when he was at home, that they loved him and wanted him involved with the family. However, his career path makes being at home and being open with them when he is at home, impossible. Then his aging father, who lives in a Nursing Home, begins to lose his long battle with his disability and Grant and Hannah send for Mac.
While at home, Mac meets Stella, a Scarlet Falls Police Detective. Enter murder and romance, neither of which Mac planned on. But he winds up helping Stella and falling for her. Eventually, he "comes clean" with his family about what he has been doing in the jungle but not before he has no choice but to seek out the assistance of the drug kingpin who was the pusher behind his trouble as a youth. Then . . .
BUT THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS HERE - you have to read Seconds to Live for yourself. But I recommend you read Hour of Need and Minutes to Kill before you read Seconds to Live. There is background in each of those books that will help you understand parts of Seconds to Live. You won't regret purchasing these three books. If you have never read anything written by Melinda Leigh, I'm certain this series will make you a Melinda Leigh fan.

Melinda Leigh's writing always draws me in from the first page, and Seconds to Live was no different. This third book of the Scarlet Falls series opens immediately into the action and keeps you hooked until the very satisfying ending.
Stella Dane is a detective who has been put in the difficult position of investigating a homicide while still recovering from the traumatic experience of a previous case. Mac Barrett is haunted by his past and chooses to spend his time working in South America to escape facing the family he feels he has disappointed. He is brought back home by the impending death of his father, but events quickly take a turn when Mac crashes his vehicle to avoid a body in the road and then wakes up to find the woman's body has mysteriously disappeared.. As Mac and Stella work together to find the missing woman, they are drawn together with crackling chemistry.
Seconds to Live is a page-turning, sexy thriller that will leave you dying to race to find out what happens next and who is behind the growing body count. I could not put this book down! As usual, Melinda Leigh accomplishes fantastic character development, letting you embrace each character. I would highly recommend Seconds to Live to anyone looking for their next great read.
